Our first recording session for this project (March, 2021) was as much about the joy of seeing friends as it was about recording music. The pandemic had a profound impact on everyone and one of the things I missed most was hanging with other musicians who had become close friends over the years. On the first session we only recorded two tunes, but as we started reading Steve Allee’s catchy Doppelgänger I instantly remembered how musically connected the group was. The recording in general has kind of a live feel to it….we just hadn’t played together in over a year. The other tune on that session was my composition Determination, which represented the struggle to stay positive and musically creative during the pandemic. On the second session two months later we recorded my composition Iris dedicated to my late friend and wonderful musician Bob Sands. That day we also recorded Jeremy’s wide open Waltz For Rusty, Steve’s clever What’s Next and Frank Kimbrough’s beautiful November. Steve, Steve and Jeremy played beautifully throughout! Thanks to Gary Mielke (recording engineer) and Yae Inoue (artwork/design) for their wonderful contributions to this project. We are happy to present What’s Next by the Rusty Burge Group and hope you enjoy the music!
